Had a nice breakfast at Newcomb’s Ranch, then continued up to Kratka Ridge. Parked at the Vista area just east of the Snow Crest ski area. Put on my snow shoes and had a nice trek up to the summit, passing the old ski lift near the top. Took just over an hour, much slower than the 35 minutes it takes me without snow. Snow was powdery in places, and ice in places. The weather was great, sunny, no wind, and 35 degrees F….which I noticed is much warmer than the 25 degrees that we had at Waterman the week before.
At the top, found the “perfect” branch to throw my string over and haul the 20m dipole up. I guess it was about 15 feet high. Set up the station on a rock, started CW on 14.064 and was spotted pretty quickly. Lots of QSOs, and of course it being 20 meters the stations far away were very loud but WA6ARA in Ridgecrest just 50 miles away was the weakest. Nice that the noise level is very low, unlike home where S5 noise level is typical. Switched over to SSB on 14.342 and made a bunch of QSOs there too, nice to here people’s actual voices. After about 40 minutes total, the QSOs trailed off, and I was getting cold, so packed up and headed down the hill. Total was 31 QSOs, a really nice activation.
Rig was IC706 and MFJ tuner, and 14AH Lithium motorcycle battery.
