A nice walk to Occidental Peak (5732 ft, W6 CT-098), 4 January 2014

I was thinking of doing my first hike of the year. Doing a peak in the high country seemed to be more than I wanted, and peak 4202 was too short a hike. So I settled on Occidental, a nice walk through oak and fir for 45 minutes to reach the summit. It was just right. I have already done “Oxy” and described it in this blog, so there will be fewer pictured than usual.

View of the San Gabriels from near the start. What a beautiful day! Temperature in the 50s.

After walking about 15 minutes, had a 2m FM QSO with Tim, K6TW, who was getting ready to leave Throop Peak after his activation there. It was windy and cold where he was. The weather where I was was “bright and fair” with not a breath of wind.

Operated for about an hour and had many nice QSOs

Headed back, had another QSO with Tim, who was on Baden Powell. Too bad I was off the summit again. Tim got a summit to summit with Nate, N0PCL on San Jacinto.

Looking back at Oxy, with San Gabriel Peak to the right
