Dan NA6MG and I hiked and activated Mt. Lewis in the summer, and we headed back to pick up the 3 point winter bonus. We planned to meet at Dawson Saddle at 0800.
To beat the traffic through downtown LA, I left early. I stopped at Islip Saddle for coffee from the thermos flask, then arrived at Dawson Saddle around 0715. Had a few more cups of coffee. The weather was cold (40F/4c), cloudy with some wind. Luckily the wind died down for the hike.
I parked here near Dawson Saddle, view towards Mt Williamson. Wintry!
Dan came by around 0800 and we set off. Not too much snow, a good thing since the first part of the trail is steep
We set up about 100 feet (30m) apart. I had brought my 20Ah Lipo battery and IC706 and dipole antenna so I could operate with 50 watts on 20m SSB. Dan operated on CW, 40m, 30m and 20m
I operated 10 minutes on 2m FM, Charles KM6CEM spotted me on 2m and also on the 20m SSB frequency which was a big help. Thanks Charles! Then about 45 minutes working many chasers on SSB, it is nice to hear peoples’ voices when I usually just hear the morse code!
Dan operating, we both had logs to sit on to keep out of the snow

We were chilled! Heading down
We drove back down to Newcomb’s Ranch for breakfast where we had hot coffee, pancakes, scrambled eggs and sausage. Wonderful! And it was sunny by the time we got there too!
