Mt Emma (W6 CT-029) 11 March 2017

Another ascent of Mt Emma near Acton. A steepish hike but OK, 1000 feet of ascent in one mile or so.

Cool temperature and a light breeze to start in the early morning just after sunrise. A nice hike up.

Mt Gleason is the lump to the left. Snow Benchmark and Magic Mountain are the double hump in the center, farther away

Took only 45 minutes to reach the top. Set up for 2m and HF, but did not make any QSOs on 2m

Lots of SOTA peaks towards the west. All labeled peaks have been activated except Peak 4054. Snow, Magic, and 4054 are in the Sand Fire closure area. It will be awhile before they reopen. The road to Mount Gleason is currently closed even to bicycles.

Informally, I refer to some of the peaks by “names

Peak 4460: “Power Mountain” because of the high voltage power lines nearby

Peak 3789: “Blum Ranch Mountain”because the farm where I have bought peaches, Blum Ranch, is nearby.

Peak 3819: “Rejection Mountain” because when I submitted it as a SOTA peak it was rejected until the W6 prominence criterion was finally changed from 500 feet to the standard 150 meters.

Nice views despite the rather barren terrain

Then a fast 20 minute walk down back to the car
